You’ve made the decision to become a Pilates teacher -- congratulations! That is an exciting decision, and one that will certainly be life-changing.

But to ensure that life-changing experience is one that changes things for the better, you want to look for the teacher training program that is right for you.

Here are some steps you can take to make sure the program you’re looking at is a good fit for your future as a Pilates teacher.

1. Do you connect with the teacher?

You are going to be working with the teacher that will be doing the training very closely and you’ll be spending a great deal of time with him or her. Thus, you want to make sure you connect with them in a way that you feel you can get the most of your teacher training from them. Even beyond your actual training, you want to have this person serve as a mentor, so the necessity to have them someone you feel can play all these roles is very important.

To determine this ahead of signing up for your teacher training, attend a regular Pilates class with the potential instructor to get a feeling for whether there is a connection. You can also visit the studio ahead of time to have a brief chat with him/her to see how you feel about them.

2. Is the class too packed?

Some studios will attempt to get as many students packed into a class as possible, as it makes them more money. However, this is at a huge cost to you (beyond just the certification price). If there are too many people in teacher training, you will not get the attention you need to make sure you get the most out of this experience.

Having a big class also doesn’t give you the attention and access to the equipment that you need. You are here to get even more comfortable with the machine, and that’s hard to do when you’re trying to share it with 5 other people.

3. What’s the takeaway for previous students?

Find a student who did the training at the same studio and hopefully with the same instructor as you’re looking to do, and chat with them about their experience. If they have raving reviews, great! Looks like you’ve found the right place. If not, you want to rethink your choice and look at other options.

The Takeaway

Become a Pilates teacher is a very exciting decision, but you want to make sure that you get the best teacher training you can. Ask yourself the above questions and find the answers before you commit to any training program.
